What Is a Handsaw?

A handsaw is a manually operated saw used to cut materials, most commonly wood. It consists of a toothed blade attached to a handle, allowing the user to move the blade back and forth through the material.

As the blade moves across the wood, the teeth remove small amounts of material with each stroke. The size and shape of the teeth determine how quickly the saw cuts and what type of cut it is designed to produce.

Handsaws do not require electricity, batteries or fuel, which makes them convenient for many jobs where portability, simplicity and control are important. They are also easy to use and require very little setup compared with powered saws.

A handsaw can be used for cutting timber, boards and other wood products, depending on the design of the blade and teeth.

Types of Handsaws

There are several types of handsaws, each designed for a particular kind of cutting. Choosing the right type of saw can make a significant difference in both cutting speed and the quality of the finished cut.

General-Purpose Handsaws

General-purpose handsaws are designed to handle a wide range of everyday cutting tasks. They are a practical choice for general woodworking, construction and DIY work where you need one versatile saw for different jobs.

Their tooth pattern is usually designed to provide a good balance between cutting speed and control, making them suitable for common wood-cutting applications.

Fine-Tooth Handsaws

Fine-tooth handsaws have smaller, more closely spaced teeth. They are designed for making cleaner and more controlled cuts, particularly when the appearance of the cut is important.

The smaller teeth generally remove less material with each stroke than coarse teeth, which can make fine-tooth saws slower but more suitable for precise work.

Coarse-Tooth Handsaws

Coarse-tooth handsaws have larger teeth with more space between them. They are designed to remove material quickly and are useful when cutting larger pieces of wood where speed is more important than achieving a very fine finish.

The larger spaces between the teeth also help clear sawdust from the cut as you work.

Handsaws are primarily used for cutting wood, but different blades and tooth designs are suited to different materials and applications.
